Upcoming State of The Industry Report ...
A State of The Industry Report of the lawn and landscape industry should include an appraisal of the success and fail rates of those new starts entering the business, and of course a status report of other aspects of the business in general . In the past, Green Industry Publications "out there" often paint a "rosey picture" when it comes to business survival or sidestep and not discuss such matters, and of course rarely address the "bad news" along with the good ... since it's equipment advertising they sell. Seldom if ever do they caution or advise landscapers not getting in over their head, and "overloaded with debt" buying mowers, trailers, trucks and the like. The failure rate in the lawn & landscape business is thought to be around 90% according to the SBA, the same for most small biz starts. The landscape business is equipment intensive and each year with high failure rates, the used equipment market is flooded with more stuff. The problem is you need cash to buy such bargains and many do by using their high interest credit cards.
Manufacturers of lawn equipment allow easy credit "pay later deals" and incentives are of little help ... and in a sense have contributed to the business fail rate ... by becoming enablers to going into business for many who simply do not have the proper working capital.
The majority of them fail or achieve only marginal incomes in the lawn and landscape industry because in addition to it being hard work, it's extremely competitive. The main reason for business failure is going into it lacking good solid business advice and to understand the "exact formula" for success. You need to be prepared, with the right information, and know what you're doing, how to actually run a business and understand what's involved. Just "barging in" unprepared is obviously not the way to go but many do. That's our job at Nilsson Associates. We provide those wishing to start a lawn or landscape business with books, tapes, videos and business education, advice, and information to enhance their success and perhaps more importantly, let them know just what they're in for starting in business.
Unfortunately, equipment manufacturers selling the "hardware" and green industry trade publications selling advertising space ... in the industry's haste to sell, sell, sell, all types of equipment necessary to the business ... few of them worry or consider the end consequences of all that "hype", pretty mower photos, essays on how a small fraction get their photos and success story on the front cover of the mags ... sort of suggesting that "hey if I can do it you can too" ... never mentioning or even the hint - that 90% of the same business folks that they sell equipment to won't make it. The evidence can be seen in the "tons" of used mowing equipment and accessories available each year. The problem of course is partly financial.
Equipment manufacturers allow easy credit when you buy new from them ... whereas buying used almost always requires full cash at time of purchase.
These are the little things, vital information, details, and bring aware that have a huge impact on the guy going into the lawn business who hasn't been given the "full story" ... and that's the reason I have decided to do a Nilsson's Lawn & Landscape State of the Industry Report. I want to show both sides of what is called by the newsmedia - fair and balanced reporting - of "going into the lawn business" because the full story and the truth of the difficulty of being successful is often ignored, brushed aside ... perhaps not wanting to "let the cat out of the bag" by telling the downside ... which of course doesn't help to sell equipment or advertising space.
